Requirement

Daventry Hill School, a specialist school in West Northamptonshire, required a new SEN classroom facility to support pupils aged 4–18 with significant cognitive delays and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

With growing demand for specialist education provision, the school needed a purpose-built environment that could accommodate a range of learning, sensory and care requirements. The project also needed to be delivered within a tight programme, with minimal disruption to the live school environment.

Portable Building Sales was appointed via West Northamptonshire Council due to its ability to provide a full turnkey solution, meet programme requirements and build on an existing relationship with the council.

Solution

Portable Building Sales delivered a 12-bay, single-storey modular building arranged in an L-shaped configuration, creating a high-quality and fully accessible learning environment tailored to SEND needs.

The building was designed to support both education and wellbeing, incorporating classrooms, flexible breakout spaces, specialist sensory rooms with ceiling hoists, kitchen area, hygiene rooms, toilets and staff facilities.

The layout ensures a practical and adaptable space for both teaching and specialist care.

Externally, the building features modern finishes with timber cladding elements, providing a welcoming, non-institutional appearance that complements the school setting.

Despite site constraints, including the presence of an existing soakaway and mains electrical cable, Portable Building Sales carried out detailed surveys and developed a suitable foundation solution. Works were carefully managed during term time, ensuring minimal disruption to students and staff while maintaining programme delivery.

Client comment

We really appreciated the collaborative approach and the high level of communication that was provided. The sales manager was always on the end of the phone or an email and they took the time to really understand our needs when supporting with the initial design stage and then the hand over with the implementation team. We valued the debrief following the project to reflect and inform lessons learnt that could be taken forward to other builds.
