How Are Portable Cabins Delivered and Installed?
9th July 2025
Portable cabins are a practical, cost-effective solution for businesses and organisations across the UK. Whether you need extra office space, welfare facilities or temporary classrooms, portable cabins offer the flexibility to suit almost any requirement.
One of the most common questions we get asked at Portable Building Sales is: “How are portable cabins delivered and installed?” In this blog, we’ll guide you through the key steps involved in delivering, positioning and installing a portable cabin, along with tips to make the process as smooth as possible.
What Is a Portable Cabin
A portable cabin is a self-contained, prefabricated building that can be delivered to your site ready for immediate use. Designed for easy transportation, portable cabins are commonly used as offices, site accommodation, storage units or welfare facilities.
They come in a range of sizes and specifications, from small single units to larger modular configurations that can be linked together.
How Are Portable Cabins Delivered
The beauty of portable cabins lies in their ability to be transported quickly and efficiently to almost any location. Here’s how the delivery process works:
- Site Access Assessment
Before delivery, our team will assess your site to check access points, ground conditions and space for positioning the cabin. Factors like overhead cables, narrow roads and soft ground are important considerations.
- Transport by Lorry
Portable cabins are typically transported by HIAB lorry (a lorry fitted with a crane). The cabin is loaded securely onto the vehicle and driven to your site.
For larger modular buildings, multiple lorry loads may be required and the units are assembled on-site.
- Crane or Lift Offload
Once on-site, the portable cabin is lifted from the lorry using the HIAB crane or, for larger units, a mobile crane. The building is then gently lowered into its designated position.
Most cabins are designed to be moved in one complete unit, making installation fast and straightforward.

How Are Portable Cabins Installed
- Ground Preparation
Portable cabins are usually placed on concrete pads, level paving slabs or temporary foundations. In some cases, adjustable steel jack legs are used to ensure the cabin is level on uneven ground.
- Connecting Services
If your portable cabin requires electricity, water or drainage, professional contractors will connect these services following local regulations and safety standards.
At Portable Building Sales, we can assist with organising these services or work alongside your chosen contractors.
- Final Checks and Handover
Once the cabin is in place and services are connected, we carry out a final inspection to ensure everything is safe, secure and ready for use.
In most cases, you can begin using your portable cabin immediately after installation.
Can Portable Cabins Be Moved After Installation
Yes, one of the key advantages of portable cabins is that they can be relocated or moved if needed. Many cabins are mounted on steel skids, allowing them to be lifted and repositioned without major disruption.
If you need to move your cabin to another location, our experienced team can arrange transportation and reinstallation for you.
How Much Does Portable Cabin Delivery Cost
The cost of delivering a portable cabin depends on:
- The size and weight of the cabin
- The distance from our depot to your site
- Any special lifting equipment required
